SEATTLE — The Seattle Sounders' FIFA Club World Cup campaign came to an end Monday as the team failed to achieve the three-goal victory needed to advance past Paris Saint-Germain.
The match drew passionate fans to a watch party at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle, where supporters gathered to witness the matchup on the big screen. The event highlighted Seattle's role as a host city for the tournament, with Lumen Field serving as the venue for six FIFA Club World Cup matches this month.
"This is great. I work only a few blocks away. I didn't even know this was going on," said Chris Fred, a Sounders fan who passed by the downtown watch party.
However, some fans acknowledged the steep odds facing their team against the French powerhouse.
"These are the European champions. Paris, they are arguably the best club in the world already and then they could win this too," one Sounders supporter said before the match.
"If the Sounders win by three and Atletico Madrid lose, then Sounders go through," explained Cooper Stevenson, a PSG fan who had tickets for Monday's match.
The reality of the challenge became apparent as fans watched the action unfold.
"Pretty much no chance," one supporter said of Seattle's advancement prosects.
Ultimately, PSG won 2-0. Despite the disappointment, some fans are still excited about the tournament's impact on the city.
"The city of Seattle is the winner no matter who wins the game," Stevenson noted.
The FIFA Club World Cup continues in Seattle, with one more match scheduled to be played at Lumen Field this week.
The Downtown Seattle Association plans to continue hosting free watch parties at Westlake Park during the semifinals.
