Whidbey Island magic at 'The Coolest Store on the Planet'

Madrona Supply Co is a gathering place for artisans and community. #k5evening

CLINTON, Wash. — Madrona Supply Co bills itself as the "coolest store on the planet," and once you walk through its doors, you might just agree.

"My name is Janae Cameron, and we're right here in Clinton, Washington, right off the ferry," says the shop's owner, who has been making local goods since 2015. "We're passionate about creativity at our core."

What makes Madrona Supply Co unique isn't just what they sell — it's that a lot of it is made in-store. Visitors can watch the creative process unfold in real-time as Cameron screen prints designs, and workers make everything from leather goods to natural fragrances to hand turned wood products at the store.

"I think it's beautiful. It's inspiring to live here," Cameron said.

Whidbey Island's natural wonders serve as the shop's greatest source of inspiration. From her store, Cameron can look out the back of the building and spot orcas swimming by. She even witnessed a humpback whale breaching with a ferry in the background. She took a handful of pictures and the moment became one of the shop's popular screen prints — a hand-drawn illustration of the breaching humpback that customers can now take home on shirts and other items.

Another inspiration — the ferry that's right down the road.

"A lot of people say, 'why Clinton, why did you open in Clinton?' I like being this close to the ferry. I like being this close to, you know, 4 million plus travelers that come by car here," Cameron said.

The ferry's influence shows up everywhere in the store. A small symbol from the ferry signs caught Cameron's eye and became another popular design, appearing on everything from stickers to coffee cups to aprons.

Other Whidbey grown makers you might see at the store:

Turnco Wood Goods crafts island-grown trees into cutting boards or mills them into raw slabs.

Unravel Bodyworks makes fragrance rollerballs and natural insect repellent.

And Cameron's son is an artist who make the handmade Beatles prints sold at the shop.

This community of creators concentrates some of Whidbey Islands magic inside one store.

"People feel it when they come in here," said Cameron. "They feel that it's different and they feel that like this is inspiring."

A space where visitors can experience the island's creative spirit whether they're locals or among the millions of travelers who pass through Clinton each year.
