SEATTLE — A trio of Seattle Mariners is heading to the Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star game, with starting catcher Cal Raleigh.
Julio Rodriguez, Bryan Woo, and Andrés Muñoz were named Sunday to the Midsummer Classic.
The players voted on the reserves and selected Rodriguez to be a backup outfielder. This will be his third All-Star in his four seasons in the majors. J-Rod is having a down year at the plate, but his defense is making up for it. He's got a 3.4 wins above replacement, second for American League (AL) outfielders, only to Aaron Judge.
Woo and Muñoz were picked by AL players, managers and coaches. This is Woo's first trip to the All-Star Game. He's 8-4 with a 2.77 earned run average (ERA) over 107.1 innings with 104 strikeouts.
The Mariners have had four of their five starters in the rotation go to the Midsummer Classic. Luis Castillo and George Kirby went in 2023. Last season, Logan Gilbert got the invite.
Muñoz is making his second trip to the All-Star Game. The Mariners' closer has 21 saves, one off his career high. He's only allowed four runs in 35 appearances with a 1.06 ERA.
Raleigh, also known as Big Dumper, was voted in Wednesday as a starter by the fans.
Raleigh and Woo are among 19 first-time All-Stars.
Detroit and Seattle will have four players each at the game. It's the first time the Mariners will have four representatives since 2018. This year, all four are 28 years old or younger, a first in franchise history.
As for the local players from other teams, three made the Midsummer Classic. Starting pitcher Tarik Skubal of Detroit was named to the AL team. Skubal played college baseball at Seattle University.
Player-elected National League reserves included Lakeside alum and Arizona Diamondback outfielder Corbin Carroll. Skubal and Carroll are two-time All-Stars.
Mercer Island's Matthew Boyd is heading to his 1st All-Star. The Chicago Cubs starting pitcher is 8-3 with a 2.65 ERA. He's have his best season in his eleven years in the majors.
There usually are about 10 roster replacements between the announcements and the game.
The All-Star Game will be played July 15 in Atlanta, Georgia.
