Skyline speedster aims for college success

Skyline's Cam Weir is a three-time All-American, a state champ, and a KingCo first-team all-league receiver and safety.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. — Skyline senior Cam Weir is a playmaking machine. He has great hands. He can shake tackles, but he can also kill you with his speed.

"I think speed is one of the greatest skills sets you can have in any sport," Weir said.

"He's an incredibly explosive athlete and there's not many guys that fast out on the football field, so not surprised at all by his football success," said Sean Hyland, Skyline High School boys track and field coach.

And when Weir is not using his lightning quickness on the football field, you'll find him on the track.

"He's just a gamer," Hyland said. "He's a racer. You just put him in the box and he'll just - he wants to go win."

When you're lining up for a race, it's just you versus everybody else," Weir said. "It's just you versus everybody else so it's like, I like that competitive nature that it's me versus you and I want to win against you every time because I don't really like losing that much."

Weir currently has the Skyline school records in the 100- and 200-meter races. In 2024, he took home a second-place finish at the state championships in the 200 meters. But his biggest moment came during the 100-meter race.

"It was incredible to watch," said Lane Mallula. "Sean and I were jumping up and down screaming while we watched him get towards that last 10 m and we knew he had it kind of locked in.

"It was a really cool experience being on that podium knowing that right below me was the first-place sign," Weir said.

Fastest high schooler in the state, not bad considering Weir's sophomore year was his first full season on a track team.

"First of all, he just has a rare first step in explosiveness," Hyland said. "I mean, he's got just a quickness and a suddenness to him that is really, really rare, and so that stood out immediately.

"The mind muscle connection that he had was really good and so you could tell him like, 'Hey, we need to bring your shin angle in just a little bit[ and just these fine tuning points and he'd be able to repeat that after a couple of reps," Mallula said. "So the coachability that he had was definitely phenomenal and he was just natural out there as well."

Weir is a three-time All-American, a state champ, and a KingCo first-team all-league receiver and safety. Weir would love to play football or run in college next year, or maybe do both.

"My mom has always said, as good as you are, you can always be better," Weir said. "And you know I don't, I don't let ever let like even though I won state last year I knew that there's a lot of faster people this year and I know that I still have to put a lot more work in to get to where I wanted to be again so just don't ever take anything for granted don't settle for anything.

"You know, I might coach another 40 years and never coach an athlete as good as Cam ever again, so it's, it's a privilege and it's special when you get someone that good and that talented to come out," Hyland said.
