Lillian has a son she hasn't told Ryan about, and Ryan has an alcohol addiction he hasn't told Lillian about. The book explores the impact of each generation in a family torn apart by tragedy. This big-hearted family saga pulls at your heart strings but is also extremely poignant.

"James" by Percival Everett is a novel re-imagining the adventures of Huckleberry Finn for Mark Twain. But from the perspective of Huckleberry’s friend Jim, who is an escaped slave. The early scenes closely follow the tale of Huckleberry Finn, with Jim overhearing he's going to be sold, so he escapes and leaves his wife and daughter to go formulate a plan to later, hopefully try and buy them back. Huck also runs away by faking his own death to escape his violent father. But as this new story unfolds, the pair separates and the book hones in on Jim's adventures. The tone turns more serious as it explores rape, murder and racism.

"A Sea of Unspoken Things" by Adrienne Young follows a woman named James who is investigating her twin brother Johnny's mysterious death. To do that she has to go back to the small town in California she grew up in and come to terms with her own haunting past. That includes a high school friends who passed away and Micah — the only person she's ever loved.

"The Women" by local author Kristin Hannah is a historical fiction novel that takes place during the Vietnam War. The novel follows 20-year-old Frankie McGrath as she joins the Army Nurse Corps to follow her brother who is fighting in the war. Throughout her time in Vietnam, she develops deep relationships with the other nurses only to return to an incredibly divided America.
