SEATTLE — Julio Rodriguez will not be joining his teammates in traveling to Atlanta for Major League Baseball's (MLB) All-Star Game next week.
The Mariners announced Rodriguez will not participate after being selected for the American League's (AL) roster. He was set to join starting catcher Cal Raleigh and pitchers Bryan Woo and Andres Munoz in Tuesday's game.
"He will take the break to recuperate, rest and prepare for the second half," the Mariners said in a release.
"I'm really honored that my peers voted me into the All-Star Game - that means a lot to me," Rodriguez said in a statement on social media Friday morning. "As much as I'd love to be out there, I want to take this time to take care of my body and fully prepare for the second half of the season.
"It's definitely tough to miss out on the All-Star experience, but I'll be cheering on all the guys and wishing them and their families an amazing week."
Rodriguez's batting average (.244) is down considerably from his previous seasons with the Mariners, but he remains one of the best outfield defenders in MLB.
The Mariners' offense has improved from a rough season in 2024, thanks in large part to Raleigh's historic campaign. The star catcher leads all of MLB with 36 home runs and is a strong contender for AL MVP.
Rodriguez dealt with some off-field adversity early in the season, when his Mercer Island home was broken into while he was away. Rodriguez's girlfriend, Seattle Reign star Jordyn Huitema, was home and locked herself in a bathroom while the intruders were inside the home.
“It was the scariest moment of my life,” Huitema told KING 5 in a June interview. “The sounds just got very loud, very quickly. And it was just like people running through the house."
Rodriguez has played well enough to earn an All-Star selection from his fellow MLB players, but will now get almost a full week to reset and prepare for the second half of the regular season.
The Mariners enter Friday's games just a game behind for the third and final AL Wild Card spot. With just one playoff appearance since 2001, the pressure is on for the Mariners to step up and earn a trip back to the postseason.
