Rescued cougar cubs find new home at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

EATONVILLE, Wash — Two 7-month-old cougar cubs are settling into their new home at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park after being rescued from harsh conditions in separate states.

Sullivan was discovered injured, dehydrated and emaciated outside Spokane, WA. Sienna was found in similar condition in New Mexico. Both cubs required extensive rehabilitation before arriving at the Eatonville wildlife park.

"Both of them had had a really rough childhood," said Becca McCloskey, curator at Northwest Trek. "They experienced a lot of loss and a lot of fear."

The cubs' recovery process has required patience from staff. Sullivan initially needed fluids mixed with elk blood to encourage drinking, which McCloskey said "he thought was the greatest thing in the world."

Park officials brought the cubs together knowing they would provide comfort to each other during their adjustment period. The pair is now learning to navigate their new habitat, though they remain cautious around visitors.

"Cat behavior is very consistent, whether it's a small cat or a large cat," McCloskey said. "You can't make a cautious cat do anything."

During a recent practice session, Sullivan eventually emerged from the far side of the enclosure, enticed by favorite treats. The exercise demonstrates the gradual progress both cubs are making in their new environment.

The cubs will remain at Northwest Trek permanently, as they cannot be released into the wild after their early rescue and rehabilitation.

"Our goal is that they will live out their days here in absolute maximum comfort," McCloskey said. "So, their days of hardship are over and they have a life of luxury ahead of them."

Staff continue working with Sullivan and Sienna to help them adjust to their new home. They will be available for public viewing Friday.
