Did you know Des Moines is the 'Sixgill Shark Capital of the World'?

A special event, Shark in the Park, at Redondo Beach will celebrate the new distinction. A marine biologist discussed the shark sightings in Des Moines.

DES MOINES, Wash. — You can forget about tropical regions or the Arctic as the newest or most popular destination for sea water exploration.

The city of Des Moines was recently proclaimed as the "Sixgill shark capital of the world."

The Bluntnose sixgill shark is a deep-sea predator that typically stays far from people to even catch a glimpse, except in Des Moines, according to Rus Higley, director of Highline MaST Center Aquarium.

For several years in a row, many shark pups have been spotted in this area of Puget Sound - some were as small as one foot to two feet long.

It is one of the largest predatory sharks, growing up to 20 feet in length and weighing more than 1,000 pounds, according to the American Oceans organization.

Higley said this distinction for the city and this part of Puget Sound is exciting and that it will draw more people to the area, in particular divers.

"We find them throughout Puget Sound, but the hub is Redondo Beach," Higley said. "There have been reports here in the last week."

Scuba divers are encouraged to explore Puget Sound in this area for a sighting.

The Bluntnose sixgill shark is not considered a significant threat to humans.

Shark in the Park

"Shark in the Park" is set for Sunday, July 6.

MaST Center intern Madeline Steppe said the event will be fun, but also educational for kids and adults.

"I'm enjoying the chance to connect with the community," Steppe said. "Some interesting promotional material is coming up."

Shark in the Park will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Redondo Waterfront and Wooten Park in Des Moines.

There will be live science demonstrations, hands-on ocean activities, family games and crafts, food trucks, local vendors, and shark-themed exhibits.

The celebration of "shark week" by the Discovery Channel is happening a few weeks later. The JAWS movie franchise just celebrated a 50th anniversary as well.
