PIERCE COUNTY, Wash — In the past week, two different people in Pierce County have purchased lottery tickets that were worth at least $1 million.
Washington's Lottery says the first ticket was a $3.4 million jackpot purchased in Sumner for the July 12 drawing. For the drawing two days later on July 14, a $1 million jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Lakewood.
A spokesperson says the Sumner ticket was purchased at the Fred Meyer on Valley Avenue East, and the Lakewood ticket came from a Safeway on Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest.
Neither winner has come to claim their prize, an official says. Washington's Lottery says there are three recent unclaimed prizes worth $10,000, one of which was purchased in Tacoma in June and the other two from Seattle earlier this month.
Unclaimed prizes are held for the winner for 180 days after the drawing, but are taken back by the state lottery fund per state law. One-third of that prize gets deposited in the economic development strategic reserve account if it is never claimed, and the other two-thirds is returned to the state.
Lottery prizes are considered taxable income, and any claimed prize over $600 is reported to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Winners of $5,000 or more will automatically have federal taxes withheld and those winners will be sent a form to send when they file taxes.
The lottery is required to check whether a $600 or more winner owes any debts to the state, and if they do, that money will be subtracted from their overall winnings.
