Supporters dance to save 92-year-old Seattle country bar at risk of closure

Regulars are urging the Seattle City Council to intervene and extend the bar's lease, preventing the establishment from losing its longtime home.

SEATTLE — Supporters of the Little Red Hen, a 92-year-old country bar facing eviction, took their campaign to the streets Wednesday with a spontaneous dance party aimed at rallying public support and drawing the attention of city leaders.

The demonstration unfolded in Columbia City, where patrons danced along Rainier Avenue South ahead of a mayoral candidate forum at the Columbia City Theater. Their goal: to save one of Seattle’s longest-running entertainment venues from closure at the end of the month.

Located in Green Lake, the Little Red Hen has operated continuously since 1933. Its future is now in jeopardy after its landlord moved to terminate the lease, citing a dispute over a shared dumpster. The eviction deadline is July 31.

"We're angry and we're scared that we're going to lose places that make us feel safe. And that's kind of another reason for this," said Nova Berger, one of the bar's regulars.

What began with a single dancer outside the theater quickly grew into a crowd moving to music in the street. For Berger, the bar represents more than music and dancing—it’s a space for belonging.

"You can go and feel like you don't have to be anyone. You can be as loud as you want. You can stomp, you can sing, you can dance, and you are just loved for who you are. That's Little Red Hen for me," she said.

Berger caught the attention of Mayor Bruce Harrell with a twirl outside the theater, but it remains unclear whether the Seattle City Council will intervene in the lease dispute.

Supporters are calling on the city to help preserve the historic venue, urging councilmembers to assist in extending the lease and preventing the eviction.

Without intervention, the Little Red Hen will be forced to vacate its Green Lake location by July 31.
