'Little Cloud Sky' brings a sense of wonder to Seattle Art Museum

The large-scale exhibit enchants visitors with 40 cheerful clouds by FriendsWithYou. #k5evening

SEATTLE — Seattle Art Museum's newest commission has visitors cloud gazing inside their lobby.

The large-scale installation that comprises of 40 smiling clouds suspended from the museum's ceiling is called "Little Cloud Sky" and was created by Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III from FriendsWithYou.

"They are multidisciplinary artists, that means that they work in a variety of media. They really have a global outreach," said José Carlos Diaz, SAM’s Susan Brotman Deputy Director for Art.

The project took around a week to install all 40 clouds in the museum's lobby.

"There's sort of a tradition of having art installations here in our forum," Diaz said. "We'll be continuing to program the space to really make it a really activated public area."

While Seattle might be known for its rain, these happy little clouds aren't a comment on weather.

"It’s taking on sort of a pop aesthetic. And I think it actually is a really clever way of sending art into public spaces," Diaz said. "I think the artists really want people to walk in and get a sense of wonder and they'll be able to say, like, 'what the heck is going on here? Who are these artists?'"

"Little Cloud Sky" is an ongoing exhibit at Seattle Art Museum.
